Technology Standard
In Technology Standard III, Legal, Social and Ethical Issues, each teacher candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the legal, social and ethical issues related to technology use.
Technology Indicators
The assessment task product will be examined in terms of four proficiency indicators. The teacher candidate will: 1.Identify ethical and legal issues using technology. 2.Analyze issues related to the uses of technology in educational settings. 3.Establish classroom policies and procedures that ensure compliance with copyright law, Fair Use guidelines, security, privacy and student online protection. 4.Use classroom procedures to manage an equitable, safe and healthy environment for students.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Needed to Perform the Task
Performing the assessment task for this technology outcome will require the following pre-requisite knowledge, skills and abilities: ·Knowledge and purpose of copyright laws and Fair Use Guidelines ·Knowledge of basic safety and health issues in a technology environment ·Knowledge of the general impact of technology in our daily lives ·Knowledge of general classroom management techniques ·Knowledge of an example of a school system’s Acceptable Use Policy ·Skill in using a computer
Many time teachers, administrators and counselors often ask questions such as, "What should I have done in that situation?" or "Did I do the right thing? "Ethical decisions are usually not clear-cut; they tend to be in the "gray areas" rather than in "black and white." Furthermore, the "right" answer in one situation is not necessarily the "right" answer in a similar case at another time. As society changes, the issues change; and, indeed, as counselors change, their perspectives change. If we understand and accept the fact that ultimately counselors will have to struggle with themselves to determine the appropriate action in each situation, then we realize the importance of ethical and legal awareness and sensitivity. We then also understand the need for periodic re-examination of the issues throughout our professional lives. The importance of knowing the contents of professional codes of conduct and the purposes and limitations of such codes is essential to the understanding of ethical and legal issues in school.After our classroom lecture on this issue I came to the conclusion that schools as a whole should focus on this standard with scrutiny.
